Hungary Telecom IPTV Data Center Construction Project - Solution Design

    After confirming that only one IPTV headend equipment site needs to be built in Budapest, the capital, in the initial phase to support 200,000 IPTV users, 300 channels, 50,000 movies and 100,000 TV drama episodes, the construction team of the IPTV headend equipment site started the solution design for the IPTV headend equipment site based on this requirement.


    The product configuration of a standard IPTV headend equipment site is as follows:

    • IPTV control plane servers

    • IPTV service plane servers

    • IPTV video resource storage devices

    • IPTV control plane security firewall

    • IPTV service plane traffic cleansing firewall

    • Control plane and service plane aggregation switches

    • Egress router of the IPTV headend equipment site


    Based on 200,000 IPTV users and 300 channels, the quantity of streaming media servers (HMS) is calculated as 4, EPG servers as 3, and STB upgrade servers as 2. All other servers on the IPTV control plane and service plane (MRF, BMS, MC, DBU, CMI, CMS, BMS DB, MGMT) are deployed in redundancy to improve system reliability. Expansion space is reserved for HMS, EPG servers and STB upgrade servers.


    Based on 50,000 movies and 100,000 TV drama episodes, the basic capacity of video resource storage devices is calculated as:40,000 × 0.7GB (SD movies) = 28,000GB,10,000 × 30GB (HD movies) = 300,000GB,80,000 × 0.1GB (SD TV dramas) = 8,000GB,20,000 × 0.9GB (HD TV dramas) = 18,000GB.The total required capacity is 354,000GB. With 30% reserved storage redundancy, the designed capacity of storage devices is 460,200GB.

    Two Eudemon2000 firewalls are adopted for the IPTV control plane security protection, deployed directly and in hot standby mode.

    One Eudemon8080E firewall is adopted for the IPTV service plane traffic cleansing, deployed in off-path mode.

    Two S9303 switches are used for the IPTV control plane aggregation, and two S9306 switches for the IPTV service plane aggregation, both in hot standby mode.

    Two CX600 routers are used as the egress routers of the IPTV headend equipment site, in hot standby mode.


    The equipment room of the IPTV headend equipment site confirmed by Magyar Telekom is a conventional data center room with -48V power supply and a floor load-bearing capacity of 800KG per square meter. After comprehensive calculation of power consumption, weight and dimensions of all servers, storage devices, switches, firewalls, routers and cabinets, the solution is designed as follows:

    • 2 cabinets for various servers, with symmetric 1:1 layout from top to bottom in the two server cabinets; servers without expansion demand on the upper layer and those requiring expansion on the lower layer;

    • 3 cabinets for storage devices;

    • 1 cabinet for 2 Eudemon2000 firewalls and 2 S9303 switches;

    • 1 cabinet for 2 S9306 switches;

    • 1 cabinet for 1 Eudemon8080E firewall;

    • 1 cabinet for 2 CX600 routers;

    • 1 PDF cabinet to reduce the length of -48V power cables for each cabinet.

    • The spare space in the lower part of each cabinet is reserved for future expansion.


    Based on the above solution, further detailed design outputs will be provided, including cabinet layout diagram, equipment connection diagram, power distribution table, VLAN division design, interconnection IP address design, multicast IP address design, routing protocol design, traffic cleansing policy design, software module interconnection design, firewall allowed/denied protocols/IP addresses/port numbers design, etc. All designs shall strictly comply with the engineering delivery standards of the IPTV headend equipment site to ensure that each design is implementable, verifiable and scalable.


    The customization of the boot-up interface, menu and interaction of the IPTV terminal equipment (STB) is arranged by the IPTV platform R&D team. One artist and one system architect will conduct in-depth communication with the corresponding personnel of the customer's marketing department, and deliver the demo of STB boot-up interface + menu + interaction and the detailed interactive operation design documents, to support the software development and production of terminal equipment and the customized development of IPTV platform software.
